Winter Solstice

December bird.jpg (222710 bytes)I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.

'We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,'
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December.
-   Oliver Herford, I Heard a Bird Sing

winter water.jpg (64466 bytes) Winter Solstice has come and gone.  Quietly we move away from the shortest day of light. Christmas so loudly captures and holds our attention that when solstice slips by, we barely notice it. Weíve turned a page, started a new chapter. It is a beginning, a time of new possibilities. Sunlight, daylight is longer, while the nights are becoming shorter. What can you do with more daylight?

solstice sun.jpg (94150 bytes)Nothing stays the same as daylight stretches out longer and the nights shorten. Seasons change and we do too as circumstances and events in life shape us. Sometimes the changes are so subtle that you don't notice it right away. For instance, a couple months ago my shoulder started hurting. I figured that it was from all the swimming I had done over the summer. My swim coach Tom observed that I was swimming with my arms too wide. Slowly my stroke had deteriorated and now I am dealing with bad stroke mechanics. To correct this  I must consciously pull my hands in closer and lift my elbows. It is very slow and difficult to teach your body to move differently.  My swimming evolved and I didnít even know it. I was working hard but not very efficiently. Iím learning to swim again, starting to retrain my body.

bend in road.jpg (357979 bytes)Just as my swimming technique has drifted so too have I. Experiences, situations, people and just busyness in general have pulled me off course. It happens so quietly, just a little change here and small shift there. I evaluated my swimming and I am not accepting deterioration. Iíve evaluated my life and I am making a course correction. Today look around and see where you are, have you changed? Solstice signifies a bend in the road, turning a corner, a change. What can you do with more daylight?
