Just Jump

My sister Cindy and I took swimming lessons at the YMCA when we were maybe four and five years old. Mom signed us up for classes taught by “Miss Dorothy” because she felt that she got her money’s worth with Dorothy teaching us. Dorothy was a no nonsense older lady and she didn’t mess around. We had been taking lessons for a while and we reached the point where Dorothy felt we were ready to jump off the diving board into the deep water. She waited till the end of class for us to do our first jump and I don’t even remember jumping off the board. What I do remember is my sister standing on the end of the diving board for a long time.  I could feel Cindy’s panic and fear as I stood on the side of the deep water waiting. Miss Dorothy was in the pool coaxing her to jump down into her arms. Time dragged by slowly as Cindy teetered on the edge of the board unable to jump. Finally Miss Dorothy said to me “Go on out and tell your mother Cindy isn’t coming until she jumps.”

I didn’t want to leave my terrified sister but at Dorothy’s prompting I headed towards the locker room door and finally Cindy jumped. That ordeal is burned into my memory and when I examine why it is because it took so long. Cindy was perched on the end of that diving board for what seemed like an eternity.  If Dorothy had not dug in and mandated that she jump Cindy may never have been the swimmer that she turned out to be.  She was an incredible swimmer, recording some long standing high school records and producing very fast times. But that little girl standing on the end of the diving board  peering into that unfathomable  water for the first time had no idea what her future held or her potential.

There are times in life when we have to jump into some terrifying places and we have a couple of choices to make. Do we jump and whose arms do we jump into? Dorothy was a seasoned capable instructor. She had taught countless children to swim. She could be trusted. When it comes to our lives we have someone that we can trust to catch us when we jump. He is trustworthy, capable and all powerful. In fact it has been said that he is omnipotent which means that he has unlimited power.  Jumping to God is the answer. He is a loving father and can be trusted. If you’re teetering on the edge of alarming cliff, waiting only prolongs the agony. Go ahead jump, He will catch you.
