What do you see?
"The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new lands, but in seeing with new eyes." - Marcel Proust, French novelist
Last week I made jello. I wanted to make a special treat for my family so I put fresh strawberries in the jello and topped it with light cool whip. I served it in pretty pink glass sherbet bowls. I anticipated my families delight when they stumbled upon these attractive tasty treats in the refrigerator. Sometimes giving the gift is more fun than receiving. I enjoyed preparing this surprise. The next day at work I found a colorful card that Kelly had created. On the card she wrote “THANKS! For the strawberry jello! I love you.” I had wanted to surprise my family with this simple gift and she turned around and surprised me.
I recall many years ago watching Kelly catch lightening bugs. It was a warm summer night and I can still see her funning barefooted, carefree with her arms outstretched. She caught one and brought it to me, her hands cupped tightly together. Carefully she opened her two hands and I saw the lightening bug. She was so gentle that it didn’t leave at first and just walked around with a half powered glow. Then it flew to the sky and glowed brightly as we said good bye. Kelly never asked for more, and was completely involved in that simple pleasure.
Did God create fireflies for children to play with? What a delight it was to observe her carelessly chasing them. I wonder how God feels watching us enjoy the gifts he has given us. Does he wait for us to notice the gifts he created for us?
So often we rush through life and we don’t take time for the little things that enrich our life. There is so much beauty all around us, we just have to stop and appreciate it. Have you ever seen the sky when it has two different shades of blue as if it were a cake and icing? Many mornings when I drive to work I see brown chickens in a yard along the way…it’s so charming – they make me smile. God’s attention to detail is amazing. How about rocks? Have you ever noticed how pretty some of them are? And those Japanese Beetles we’re beginning to see, how about their color? They are neon! Today really look and see the beauty of God’s creation.
“What a wildly wonderful world, God! You made it all, with Wisdom at your side, made earth overflow with your wonderful creations.” Psalm 104:24 (The Message)
